US Sanctions Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority, Warns Hormuz Toll Payers
The US sanctioned Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority, the agency Tehran has tasked with regulating transits through the Strait of Hormuz, and warned that companies or governments that pay its fees or otherwise cooperate with it could face penalties after Treasury linked the body to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the designation was part of an “Economic Fury” campaign, described the charges as Iranian tolls “disguised as aid payments,” and said the US would also cut Iranian airlines off from landing slots, refueling and ticket sales.
The move hardens Washington’s rejection of an Iranian tolling regime in the waterway as negotiations remain unsettled. Commercial shipping through Hormuz dwindled to only a few mostly Iran-linked vessels on Wednesday, with just two ships observed entering the Persian Gulf; more than 10 Chinese ships have recently been tracked exiting the strait, and US Central Command said more than 20 warships enforcing the blockade have redirected 111 vessels. Bessent said only a “satisfactory outcome” in negotiations would halt the pressure campaign.
