Trump Says Strait of Hormuz Must Open Immediately, Rules Out Iran Sanctions Relief
President Donald Trump hardened the US position in negotiations with Iran, saying any agreement must reopen the Strait of Hormuz immediately as international waters open to all ships and that Washington is not discussing sanctions relief or financial concessions. After the White House rejected an Iranian state-television report of a draft memorandum of understanding as "not true" and "a complete fabrication," Trump said Tehran wanted a deal but the US was not satisfied with the terms.
Iranian state TV had said Tehran obtained an unofficial framework under which Iran would restore commercial shipping through the strait to pre-war levels within a month while the US withdrew forces from Iran’s vicinity and lifted a naval blockade; the report said Iran and Oman would manage traffic, military vessels would be excluded and a final accord could be reached within 60 days. Trump’s later remarks pointed to tougher US terms, saying nobody would control the waterway, warning Oman over its role, rejecting Russia or China as destinations for Iran’s highly enriched uranium and questioning whether Washington should sign a deal unless Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states join the Abraham Accords.
