US Broadens Iran Sanctions With New Curbs on Companies and Vessels
The US broadened its sanctions campaign against Iran with a fresh round of Treasury measures targeting companies and vessels, after earlier sanctioning Tehran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority and warning companies and governments not to pay transit fees for passage through the Strait of Hormuz or disguise them as aid. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also said Washington would cut Iranian airlines off from landing slots, refueling and ticket sales.
The steps deepen pressure on Iran’s shipping and transport networks as negotiations remain unsettled. Bessent said the measures are part of what he called an Economic Fury campaign targeting oil exports and transport networks, said a US naval blockade had pushed Iranian crude shipments to record lows, and added that only a satisfactory outcome in talks would halt the pressure campaign.
