White House Nears Anthropic Deal for NSA, Intelligence Agencies Amid $9 Billion Secret Chip Purchases
The White House is nearing a deal with Anthropic that would let the NSA and other US intelligence agencies use its advanced AI models for classified work, according to the New York Times. The report also said the White House approved $9 billion in secret chip purchases for intelligence agencies and cleared the NSA to use Anthropic’s AI even after the Pentagon flagged the company as a supply-chain threat.
The development follows a Pentagon effort disclosed this week to test models from OpenAI, Google and others with 25 power users across five military theater commands as the Defense Department looked for alternatives to Anthropic’s Claude. Claude is used heavily in the Pentagon’s Maven Smart System, including classified operations, and the department had given itself six months to wind down Anthropic use while seeking access to multiple model providers.
