Walmart Beats on $177.75 Billion Revenue, Guides Q2 EPS to 72-74 Cents
Walmart reported fiscal first-quarter revenue of $177.75 billion, up 7.3% and above estimates of about $175 billion, while adjusted earnings matched expectations at 66 cents a share. U.S. comparable sales excluding fuel rose 4.1%, with transactions up 3% and average ticket up 1.1%, while U.S. e-commerce sales increased 26% and contributed roughly 530 basis points to comparable-sales growth.
The retailer projected full-year adjusted earnings of $2.75 to $2.85 a share, below the $2.92 consensus, and forecast second-quarter adjusted EPS of 72 cents to 74 cents versus estimates of 75 cents. Walmart said first-quarter operating income was hit by 250 basis points from higher fuel costs in distribution and fulfillment, and it expects higher prices in the second quarter and second half if fuel prices remain high. The CFO also said consumers may feel more strain in the second quarter as the effect of tax refunds fades, and that customer fuel purchases at Walmart stations fell below 10 gallons for the first time since 2022, which he described as a sign of financial stress.
