Rubio Presses China on Iran as Hormuz Shipping Risks Rise

politicsus-foreign-policyworldiranchina 94 posts · 49 accounts

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US hopes to persuade China to take a more active role in pushing Iran to back down in the Persian Gulf, making a more explicit public appeal to Beijing as tensions threaten shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Rubio said Chinese ships are stuck in the Gulf because of Iran's actions and argued it is in Beijing's interest to help restore stability, according to remarks aired on Fox News and reported by Reuters.

Rubio said China could have a chance to act at the United Nations later this week on a resolution condemning Iran's actions in the straits. The remarks come after a senior White House official said China had already begun pressuring Iran to reach an agreement, adding to the Iran focus of President Donald Trump's Beijing trip after he said he expected a long conversation with Xi Jinping on the conflict but did not think he needed China's help.
