Iran Widens Pressure on Hormuz Shipping After JIN LI Redirection Report
Video showed Iran boarding the Chinese tanker Ocean Koi, while the Institute for the Study of War said Iranian media also circulated footage of the Artesh Navy seizing and redirecting the vessel JIN LI in the Gulf of Oman. Together, the incidents pointed to broader Iranian pressure on commercial shipping around the Strait of Hormuz.
The developments add to a standoff in which US forces are enforcing a blockade on Iranian ports. US Central Command said on May 8 that naval forces had redirected 57 vessels since April 13 and disabled the Iranian tankers Sea Star III and Sevda after they attempted to enter an Iranian port on the Gulf of Oman. The study said Iran's growing reliance on the strait suggests it may be reluctant to give up control of the passage in negotiations.
