US Payrolls Rise 115,000 in April, Beating Forecasts as Unemployment Holds at 4.3%

businessmacroeconomics 82 posts · 46 accounts

U.S. employers added 115,000 jobs in April, more than economists expected, while the unemployment rate held at 4.3%. March payrolls were revised up to 185,000, though net revisions to the prior two months subtracted 16,000 jobs, and April marked the second straight month of payroll gains, the first back-to-back advance in nearly a year.

Average hourly earnings rose 0.2% from the prior month and 3.6% from a year earlier, both below estimates. The labor-force participation rate was 61.8% and the underemployment rate 8.2%, while hiring was strongest in healthcare, retail and transportation and warehousing, and the three-month average pace of job growth eased to 48,000.
