Federal Prosecutors Charge Texas Man in Secret Service Shooting Near Washington Monument
Federal prosecutors on Wednesday charged Michael Marx, 45, of Midland, Texas, in a complaint filed in U.S. District Court in connection with the May 4 shooting near the Washington Monument on the National Mall. Prosecutors allege he carried an illegal firearm into Washington, D.C., opened fire at Secret Service officers near a crowded intersection and wounded a civilian bystander who was crossing the street with family.
The shooting briefly put the White House on lockdown Monday. Secret Service Deputy Director Matthew Quinn said plainclothes officers spotted a suspicious person who appeared to have a firearm near the White House at about 3:30 p.m. and alerted uniformed officers; after the man fled on foot and fired toward Secret Service personnel, officers returned fire and shot him. Quinn said the bystander, a minor, was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening.
