Iran Response to US Proposal Seeks Sanctions Relief and Hormuz Reopening
Iran’s response to the latest US proposal, sent through Pakistani mediators after days of waiting for Tehran’s formal reply, is now being described in Iranian and regional reports as a counterproposal centered on ending the war first. Accounts of the text say Tehran wants an immediate halt to hostilities, guarantees against future attacks, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and relief from US sanctions, oil-sale restrictions and the naval blockade, along with the release of frozen assets; one report said it also seeks an end to the war on all fronts, especially Lebanon.
Other reports said the proposal envisions 30 days of follow-on talks after fighting stops, conducted in writing through Pakistan. The nuclear terms remain disputed: The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, said Iran was willing to suspend uranium enrichment for a period shorter than the 20-year moratorium sought by Washington but rejected dismantling its nuclear facilities, while an Iranian source later told Tasnim that the Journal’s account was inaccurate in key parts, particularly on nuclear-material details.
