S&P 500, Nasdaq Hit Records as Oil Settles Lower on Iran Hopes
U.S. stocks closed at record highs on Wednesday while oil ended sharply lower as reports of progress toward a U.S.-Iran agreement lifted risk appetite and reduced fears of a prolonged supply shock through the Strait of Hormuz. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq finished at records, while Brent crude, after briefly moving back above $100 a barrel during the session, settled at $101.27, down $8.60 or 7.83%. U.S. crude settled at $95.08 a barrel, down $7.19 or 7.03%.
The moves extended a broader market reversal that began after President Donald Trump paused Project Freedom, the U.S. effort to move ships through the Strait of Hormuz, while negotiations continued. Reports now suggest Washington and Tehran are moving closer to an agreement to end the war, though Brent's rebound above $100 before settling lower showed traders still expect volatility as diplomatic headlines continue to drive energy markets.
