Iran Conditions Hormuz Reopening on End of War and Lifting Sanctions
Iran said navigation through the Strait of Hormuz would return to normal only if the war ends and the blockade and sanctions are lifted, signaling that key gaps remain in talks over a temporary framework to halt the fighting. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran is still reviewing messages passed through Pakistani mediators and has not yet replied to Washington, while senior Iranian official Mohsen Rezaei described the current US plan for reopening the waterway as unrealistic and said any deal would need to include reparations for damage inflicted on Iran.
Reuters reported that Washington and Tehran are working toward a one-page temporary memorandum that would formally end the war, resolve the Strait of Hormuz crisis and open a 30-day window for broader talks while leaving major disputes unresolved. The draft omits several previously rejected US demands, including limits on Iran’s missile program and support for proxy militias, and makes no mention of Iran’s stockpile of more than 400 kilograms of near-weapons-grade uranium. Trump said Iran has one week to reach a deal establishing a framework for future nuclear negotiations and warned US strikes could resume if talks fail.
