Shake Shack shares slid after the burger chain reported first-quarter revenue of $366.7 million, up 14.3% from a year earlier but below estimates of $370.76 million, amid pressures including rising beef costs and inclement weather. Adjusted earnings were break-even, missing expectations for $0.12 a share, and the company posted an operating loss of $2.6 million compared with operating income of $2.8 million a year earlier.

Same-Shack sales increased 4.6% and system-wide sales rose 14.1% to $558.3 million. Shake Shack opened 17 company-operated restaurants and five licensed locations during the quarter, bringing its total system-wide footprint to more than 685 locations, and said Michelle Hook, formerly Portillo’s chief financial officer, will join Shake Shack as CFO on May 11.
