Musk Takes Stand in Trial Over OpenAI's For-Profit Shift
Elon Musk took the stand Tuesday as his trial against OpenAI moved from opening arguments into testimony, with his lawyer telling jurors that the company’s co-founders undermined his public-good AI efforts by turning the company for-profit. Musk claims he was deceived into donating roughly $38 million to OpenAI, believing the lab would remain a nonprofit organization.
In testimony, Musk said a loss would “give license to looting every charity in America.” OpenAI’s lead counsel responded that the case is happening because “Mr. Musk didn’t get his way,” in a trial that could reopen questions around OpenAI’s founding promises, its Microsoft ties and its path to an IPO.
