Spain Jobless Rate Rises to 10.8% as First-Quarter Employment Falls

Spain's unemployment rate rose to 10.8% in the first quarter as the number of unemployed increased by 231,500, marking the biggest rise in 13 years, according to figures cited from INE. Social security affiliation fell by 170,300 in the period and 191,400 private-sector jobs were lost.

Employment fell at twice the pace of a year earlier, while the activity rate slipped to 58.86%. The active population increased by 447,000 from a year earlier.
