Berkshire Cash Hits Record $397 Billion in Greg Abel’s First Quarter
Berkshire Hathaway’s cash pile rose to a record $397 billion in Greg Abel’s first quarter as chief executive, helped by $8.1 billion in net equity sales. First-quarter operating earnings rose nearly 18% from a year earlier to $11.35 billion, while quarterly profit more than doubled.
At Berkshire’s annual meeting, Abel faced investor questions about how he will deploy the cash reserve as the conglomerate has lagged behind the S&P 500 since Warren Buffett’s retirement. Buffett said Berkshire remained “a phone call away” from a major investment, while warning that prices for many assets looked “very silly.”
