BOJ Holds Rates as Split Vote Raises June Hike Prospects
The Bank of Japan left rates unchanged in a split decision, with three board members dissenting in favor of a hike, a result that increased the likelihood of a move in June. Governor Kazuo Ueda said the BOJ stayed on hold because the probability of its baseline outlook had decreased, highlighting uncertainty over the economy.
Ueda said policymakers want more time to evaluate how conditions in the Middle East may affect Japan’s economy, prices and progress toward the inflation goal. He said underlying inflation has not fully stabilized at 2%, but added that a rate hike is possible unless there is significant downside pressure on the economy, and that the BOJ will keep increasing interest rates while adjusting monetary support in line with economic, price and financial conditions.
