US GDP Grows 2% as Jobless Claims Hit 1969 Low

businessmacroeconomics 21 posts · 16 accounts

The US economy grew at a 2.0% annualized pace in the first quarter, according to the advance estimate, rebounding from 0.5% in the prior quarter but falling short of the 2.3% estimate. Personal consumption rose 1.6%, above a 1.4% forecast though slower than the prior quarter's 1.9%, while March personal income increased 0.6% from a month earlier and personal spending climbed 0.9%.

Separately, initial jobless claims fell to 189,000 in the week ended April 25, below expectations for 212,000 and the lowest reading since September 1969, though the figure is subject to revision. The drop in applications for unemployment benefits suggests job-cut announcements have not yet meaningfully translated into layoffs.
