Saudi Tankers Reroute To Suez Canal As Houthi Blockade Doubles Shipping Costs To $2.87 Million
At least three Saudi product tankers carrying gasoline and diesel from Red Sea ports have rerouted toward the Suez Canal, abandoning planned transits through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait following a Houthi maritime ban on Saudi vessels.
The longer voyages are pushing fuel costs per vessel to $2.87 million, up from $1.26 million, Reuters reported, while Suez tolls and a 48-day sailing time add significant expenses to the route. The detour extends the typical 19-day transit to Asia by roughly a month, straining costs for charterers moving cargo tied to Saudi Arabia’s 7 million barrels-per-day oil export capacity.
