Houthis Study Red Sea Shipping Fees, Exempt Chinese Fleet
The Houthis are considering imposing transit fees on commercial vessels sailing through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in the southern Red Sea, with regional sources indicating Chinese ships would be fully exempt from the proposed toll system. A timetable for the implementation of the fees has not been set.
The proposal follows a naval blockade announced a week ago targeting ships linked to Saudi Arabia. Iranian officials discussed the fee plan with Houthi representatives during meetings earlier this month, and Iranian advisers assisted in developing a framework to regulate the charges. The potential toll system comes as shipping data shows transit through the strait has reached its highest level in a week, while Saudi-linked tankers continue rerouting cargo around Africa and through the Suez Canal to reach Asian markets.
