Brazil Requests WTO Consultations Over US Tariffs of 25% and Up to 12.5%

politicstariffsworldsouth-americabusinesslaw 6 posts · 5 accounts

Brazil has requested World Trade Organization consultations with the US over recently announced tariffs on Brazilian goods, challenging a 25% duty and additional tariffs of up to 12.5% under the WTO dispute settlement system.

Brazil says the measures violate US obligations under WTO rules. The challenge covers a 25% tariff Washington justified through alleged unfair trade practices and duties of up to 12.5% tied to claims Brazil and other partners inadequately enforce bans on forced labor. Consultations are the first stage of a WTO dispute and do not remove the tariffs; Brazil can normally request a panel only if the talks fail.
