Senate Advances Bill For Tougher Russia And Iran Sanctions In 86-12 Vote
The U.S. Senate voted 86-12 to advance a bipartisan bill that would allow the president to impose harsher tariffs and sanctions on Russia and Iran. The measure, championed by the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, grants the executive branch authority to target major buyers of Russian energy and extend restrictions on Tehran.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky watched the procedural vote from the Capitol gallery and applauded the senators. The bill still requires a final Senate vote and House approval; with the lower chamber in summer recess, final action is not expected until at least September.
