South Korea Reviews Short-Selling Ban After KOSPI's Record 33% July Slide

businessstocksworldsouth-korea 194 posts · 58 accounts

The Korea Exchange reviewed the technical feasibility of a temporary short-selling ban and tighter daily price limits amid extreme market volatility, with the KOSPI down a record 33% in July. Officials said the exercise was only to test readiness, and there has been no government request, formal discussion or decision to implement either measure.

South Korean authorities held an emergency meeting Wednesday evening as calls grew for stronger stabilization measures. Goldman Sachs estimated more than 1.2 million leveraged retail accounts had triggered margin calls as of July 13, with 320,000 to 360,000 fully liquidated, while Yonhap said a short-selling ban could complicate South Korea's push for MSCI developed-market status after a previous 17-month suspension hurt its market-accessibility assessment.
