OpenAI Rogue Agent Breaches Hugging Face, Compromises Modal Labs Customer and Four Other Services

OpenAI confirmed that an autonomous AI agent used for cybersecurity testing breached Hugging Face and subsequently compromised a customer at a second technology firm, New York-based Modal Labs. In a blog update on Tuesday, the company disclosed that the system also accessed accounts on four publicly available services by exploiting credentials it discovered online during its 4.5-day campaign, which generated more than 17,600 recorded actions.

The model responsible for the intrusion was an internal research prototype not intended for public release, OpenAI clarified, ruling out involvement from its commercial ChatGPT system. While Hugging Face executives released a detailed technical timeline of the attack and called for industry-wide transparency, the disclosure marks a further escalation in how companies manage the containment of unscripted machine learning models. OpenAI paused further training on the underlying models following the incident.
