U.S. Treasury Sanctions Two Iranian Firms for Strait of Hormuz Insurance Extortion
The U.S. Treasury sanctioned two Iranian firms tied to a scheme that forces commercial vessels to purchase mandatory maritime "insurance" to transit the Strait of Hormuz.
The Office of Foreign Assets Control named the Persian Gulf Marine Insurance Company and Hormuz Safe Marine Services Authority on Wednesday. The Treasury stated the fees, collected by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, also accept digital assets to bypass sanctions, with coverage purportedly protecting ships from vessel seizures orchestrated by Tehran.
