China Warns Ties With Philippines at 'Crossroads' After Coast Guard Clash Injures Sailor

worldchinapoliticsmaritime 43 posts · 23 accounts

China warned that its bilateral ties with the Philippines are at a “crossroads” following a July 20 confrontation in the South China Sea. The incident occurred at the contested Second Thomas Shoal, where Philippine military officials reported that a coast guard member struck a Filipino sailor on the head with a wooden baton, causing an injury.

Beijing summoned the Philippine ambassador and lodged a protest alleging “malicious harassment,” while the United States condemned Beijing’s “dangerous and aggressive” actions and urged an immediate halt to destabilizing operations. The diplomatic escalation coincides with a visit to Manila by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio for a gathering of Association of Southeast Asian Nations foreign ministers.
