Semiconductor Equipment Lead Times Double to A Year as Chipmakers Accelerate Fabs

Lead times for major semiconductor manufacturing equipment have risen 1.5 to two times, extending delivery schedules to roughly 12 months as orders for fabrication plant tools surge. The five largest equipment suppliers, which control about 70% of the global market, are running production lines at full capacity to meet accumulating orders for tools used by leading chipmakers.

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are adjusting procurement plans to place equipment orders earlier and prevent delays in new fab construction. While similar equipment shortages occurred in 2021 and 2022 due to pandemic supply chain disruptions, current delays stem from unprecedented AI-driven infrastructure spending that is expected to keep delivery windows extended and intensify competition for manufacturing capacity.
