Justice Department Launches Civil Rights Probe Into New Jersey Over 6,600 Noncitizen Voter Registrations
The Justice Department’s civil rights division has opened an investigation into New Jersey after Governor Mikie Sherrill announced that a state software error resulted in roughly 6,600 noncitizens being added to the voter rolls. Sherrill confirmed that at least 400 of those individuals cast ballots in elections between 2023 and 2024.
The revelation has intensified legislative pressure in the state, with New Jersey Republicans calling for a special committee with subpoena power to compel the governor to release voting records. Lawmakers also noted that more than 20 states currently refuse to share voter rolls with the federal government, a hurdle advocates say the SAVE America Act aims to resolve.
