South Korea Raises Cash Margin For Single-Stock Leverage ETFs To 30 Million Won
The South Korean government will raise the cash margin requirement for leveraged single-stock products to 30 million won, with implementation beginning July 31. The updated rules for exchange-traded funds and notes will require retail investors to hold roughly $20,300 in liquid funds to open or add positions, up from about $6,800, and will disqualify stocks, bonds and other securities from counting toward the deposit.
The policy follows a week of sharp volatility in regional benchmarks that triggered automatic trading curbs, prompting regulators to adjust leverage limits. Market participants must now secure the full collateral requirement in liquid currency rather than using pledged securities, a structural change designed to reduce systemic risk and cap speculative positioning. The new deposit standard will take effect across all trading platforms on the July 31 implementation date.
