Iran Claims 1 of 3 Oil Tankers Catches Fire South of Hormuz as US Says Strait Is Open

businessenergy-marketsoilworldiranpoliticsmaritime 201 posts · 52 accounts

Iran's Revolutionary Guards claimed one of three oil tankers caught fire after an explosion south of the Strait of Hormuz and the other two turned back. The Guards had earlier warned shipping companies that the strait's southern route is mined, called alternative routes unsafe and said no tanker would enter or leave the waterway without coordination with Iran.

The Guards also said the strait's entry and exit points were under their control. US Central Command rejected that, saying Iran does not control the strait, commercial vessels continue to use it with US military support and American forces have helped more than 900 ships transit since early May. An Iranian military source cited by Fars separately said the strait remained closed, while MarineTraffic data at one point showed no crude oil moving through the strait.
