Big Tech Halts Buybacks, Raises $49.7 Billion to Fund $1.8 Trillion in AI Commitments

U.S. tech companies including Alphabet, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and Oracle have reversed a two-decade trend of returning capital to shareholders, shifting to raise a record $49.7 billion in new debt to fund a record $1.8 trillion in future data center and artificial intelligence spending commitments.

The financing pivot is tightening credit markets, with credit default spreads widening for the spending heavyweights as bond investors demand higher yields. Alphabet reported negative free cash flow of $5.9 billion in the second quarter, the first such result since its 2004 IPO, and has halted share repurchases. Creditors and rating agencies are increasingly relying on variable interest entities to keep the financing off balance sheets, pushing Meta’s unbooked commitments to $421 billion against $152 billion in recorded liabilities.
