China Orders Nvidia Chip Halt as Huawei Targets 25% Share for Foreign AI Chip Reliance
Chinese authorities have privately instructed domestic companies to halt purchases of Nvidia chips, according to a Wall Street Journal report, after Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick downplayed a U.S. product in a television appearance. Officials publicly cited cybersecurity concerns while privately enforcing the ban following remarks that described the silicon as a “fourth-best product.”
Huawei published details of a roadmap to reduce China’s dependence on foreign AI chips from 90% in 2021 to less than 60% by 2025, with designs projected to lower the figure to 25% within five years, Morgan Stanley data shows. The company said it developed workarounds to produce near state-of-the-art silicon without leading-edge machinery, with deputy chairman Eric Xu citing U.S. policy as the driver for the accelerated development.
