Houthis Claim Strikes on 2 Saudi Oil Tankers as UKMTO Reports Tanker Hit Off Saudi Arabia
Yemen's Houthis said they targeted two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea with missiles and drones, saying the vessels violated a naval blockade the group announced on Monday. Separately, the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency said a tanker was struck by an unknown projectile 70 nautical miles off Saudi Arabia's Al Shuqaiq, causing a fire that the crew was fighting, with no casualties reported.
The attack claim followed the Houthis' announcement of a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia. The International Chamber of Shipping said the group had sent radio warnings to ships, and WindwardAI said five tankers carrying Saudi-origin crude and refined products reversed course ahead of Bab al-Mandab. Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree said nearly 10 other ships were forced to retreat, while Reuters said the Saudi-led coalition had warned it would respond firmly.
