Houthis Block Saudi Shipping in Red Sea Ports; Two Tankers Reverse Course
Yemen’s Houthi armed forces announced an immediate maritime blockade on Saudi shipping, warning in a recent email that vessels loading or discharging cargo at Saudi ports will face sanctions and can be targeted by Yemeni forces "in any location within the operational reach," Reuters reported.
Following the warning, shipping data showed two oil tankers carrying Saudi crude to China and India reversing course in the Red Sea toward the Suez Canal. The embargo applies to any ship calling Saudi ports regardless of flag, complicating export flows that previously relied on the Red Sea following the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz. MarineTraffic data showed vessels still transiting the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, while a Saudi-led coalition warned of a forceful response and said protection measures were already being implemented.
