Trump Administration Imposes 50% Tariffs on Canadian Goods Under Section 338 Provision, Effective Aug. 19

politicstariffsworldcanadaus-foreign-policy 69 posts · 41 accounts

The White House announced an additional 50% tariff on a broad range of Canadian imports under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, an authority that has never previously been used. The proclamations, signed Monday, cover separate product categories including wine, hockey sticks and cement, and will take effect in 30 days.

The administration cited discriminatory trade practices by Ottawa against U.S. alcohol, dairy and automotive sectors as the basis for the new duties. While the levies apply to goods that qualify for duty-free treatment under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, energy, potash, fish, critical minerals and products subject to separate Section 232 measures are exempt. Officials stated Canadian imports of American cars fell roughly 22% following prior trade barriers.
