Trump Imposes 50% Tariff on Canadian Goods Citing Discrimination in Car, Dairy and Alcohol Trade
The Trump administration will levy a 50% tariff on a broad range of Canadian imports under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, citing discriminatory Canadian trade practices affecting American cars, alcohol and dairy products.
The new duties take effect on Aug. 19 and cover goods ranging from wine to cement, including those qualifying for duty-free treatment under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Energy, potash, fish, critical minerals and products subject to Section 232 duties are exempt. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa remains prepared to deepen trade talks and has submitted proposals to resolve the disputes.
