Judge Halts Paramount's $110 Billion Warner Bros. Merger for 14 Days
A federal judge issued a 14-day temporary restraining order blocking Paramount’s $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. The pause was granted at the request of a 12-state coalition of attorneys general, led by California, to halt the media merger immediately.
The court noted that the states raised serious questions regarding whether the deal would substantially lessen competition in the theatrical film distribution market and highlighted the difficulty of unwinding the transaction after closing. A hearing to determine whether to freeze the merger for the duration of the states’ antitrust lawsuit is scheduled for Aug. 3. If the acquisition is not finalized by Sept. 30, Paramount will begin accruing a $7 million daily penalty.
