Japan Core Inflation Hits 1.6%, Topping Four-Year Low and Pushing Bond Yields Higher
Japan’s core consumer price inflation increased to 1.6% in June, matching economist forecasts and rising from a four-year low of 1.4%. The figure remains below the Bank of Japan’s 2% policy target.
The data reinforced underlying price pressures, pushing the Nikkei 225 down 2.7% and erasing approximately $190 billion in market value. Government bond yields followed higher, with the 2-year rate climbing 1.5 basis points to 1.505% and the 10-year rate rising to 2.810%.
