Trump Launches Section 301 Probe of EU Trade Practices, Threatens Tariffs After €890 Million Google Fine
President Donald Trump ordered a Section 301 trade investigation into the European Union following the bloc’s €890 million ($1 billion) antitrust fine of Google. In a Truth Social post, Trump declared the administration would open the probe immediately and warned of substantial retaliatory tariffs on European goods to pressure the bloc into reversing the penalties.
The European Commission issued the penalty Tuesday under the Digital Markets Act for favoring its own shopping and travel services in search results. Trump also cited cumulative fines levied against Apple, Meta and Amazon, describing the combined penalties as a discriminatory practice that will prompt a significant tariff in the near term.
