Hormuz Crossings Drop to 8, Three Week Low as U.S. Crude Tops $81.64
Confirmed crossings through MarineTraffic's monitored Strait of Hormuz zone fell to eight on July 16 from 15 a day earlier, a three week low. Separate shipping data showed only three commodity vessels crossed Thursday, the fewest daily transits since May.
Seven of the eight July 16 transits used the Iranian route and none used the Omani route, MarineTraffic said. Separate shipping data said most ships were halting or making U-turns after recent Iranian attacks on vessels and the resumption of a U.S. blockade on Iran-related shipping, though a CENTCOM spokesperson told Al Jazeera the strait remains open. U.S. crude futures rose more than 3% to $81.64 a barrel, the highest since June 15, and oil was on track for its biggest weekly gain since April.
