Zelensky Names Khmara to Replace Fedorov as Ukraine Defense Minister
President Volodymyr Zelensky named Yevhen Khmara to replace Mykhailo Fedorov as Ukraine's defense minister and tasked the acting Security Service chief with performing the minister's duties until a permanent appointment is made. Zelensky said he would ask parliament to approve Khmara once the required legal procedures are completed.
The nomination follows protests in several Ukrainian cities over Fedorov's dismissal and doubts that lawmakers had enough votes to confirm earlier contender Ihor Klymenko. Zelensky said he respected the protests and that Fedorov would remain on his team in a role to be announced later. Fedorov has said he identified 11 major problems in the armed forces, while Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi thanked him for his service and Joint Forces Commander Mykhailo Drapatyi backed his push to change the military system.
