Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis Proposes 30-Day Review of Frontier AI Models for U.S. Market
Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis outlined a framework for a U.S. standards body that would require developers to submit frontier AI models for safety review up to 30 days before commercial release. The proposed watchdog would establish performance thresholds to classify frontier-class systems and could mandate a development slowdown if the models are assessed as posing unacceptable risks.
Modeled after the financial sector regulator FINRA, the program would begin on a voluntary basis and later transition to a mandatory requirement for companies selling frontier systems in the American market. The proposal drew immediate endorsement from industry leaders, including a post by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, positioning the safety framework as a response to timelines placing artificial general intelligence within a few years.

@kimmonismusDemis Hassabis has written a piece about AGI, and rarely has he sounded so optimistic. Read his article; the golden future of science lies ahead of us; we are on the threshold of the singularity: "AGI cannot be compared to standard techno

@mustafasuleymanFully support this important proposal from @demishassabis. The time for us all to act is now. "...we must use this precious window before AGI arrives to shape this technology for the benefit of all humanity."
@andrewcurran_Demis Hassabis is calling for the US to establish a Frontier AI Standards Body to 'conduct testing in areas relevant to national security'. Frontier Labs would initially voluntarily submit Frontier Models (thresholds for these two terms to
@samathis is a thoughtful proposal from demis:
@levieThoughtful proposal for a standards body for AI. This is distinct from a regulatory agency, and would certainly allow for much faster improvement of standards and collaboration with the industry. What you definitely don’t want is for AI p
@chamathAs usual, Demis is quite well reasoned and his framework is very reasonable. Especially considering that the alternative seems to be the “Pull Up The Ladder Framework” from the other guys, I would suggest we adopt Demis’ version.
@josephjacks_@chamath No, Chamath. This is wholly indistinguishable from what OAI / Anthropic want. “Initially, Frontier Labs would voluntarily share models with the Standards Body for review up to 30 days before release. Once the assessment protocol

@satyanadellaAn important piece from Demis. We need more of this kind of thinking. A good reminder that the goal is a frontier ecosystem that promotes innovation and choice, while avoiding any one model drop that breaks the world!
@mtsliveSITUATION EXPLAINED: Demis Hassabis says AGI is close and just proposed how to regulate it in a new essay. • His plan: a new standards body based on FINRA, the banking regulator, not a top-down agency like the FAA or Nuclear Regulatory Com
@ziv_ravidSo Demis proposed a "FINRA for AI". Quick context for non-finance people: FINRA is the body that polices US stockbrokers. It's private, funded by the firms it regulates, and overseen by the SEC. Industry policing itself, basically. His idea
