Zelensky Appoints Khmara as Interim Defense Minister After Fedorov Ouster
Ukraine approved cabinet personnel changes and President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed Yevhen Khmara as interim defense minister on July 16, a day after removing Mykhailo Fedorov. Zelensky said he would later ask parliament to confirm Khmara, the acting head of the Security Service of Ukraine, as defense minister.
Fedorov's dismissal triggered protests in several Ukrainian cities. Zelensky said the General Staff and Fedorov were not communicating and that problems in the defense and military sector had to be resolved decisively. Fedorov, who had been in the job for six months, later said he rejected an offer to stay on as a presidential adviser, while Joint Forces Commander Mykhailo Drapatyi publicly backed him.
