U.S. Treasury Sanctions Supreme Leader Financier Ali Ansari and Exchange Houses Over Strait of Hormuz Attacks
The U.S. Treasury sanctioned Iranian financier Ali Ansari and five exchange houses that move $ billions annually, citing his role in managing a global asset network for Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and the diversion of regime wealth. The Office of Foreign Assets Control triggered the designation following Tehran's recent attacks on international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the new measures breached the memorandum of understanding between the two countries. Araghchi argued that the United States is violating Paragraph 9 of the agreement and emphasized that any deal depends on mutual compliance from both sides.
