Samsung Foundry Backlog Hits $32.7 Billion as Meta and Anthropic Explore 2nm Chips

Samsung Foundry’s order backlog has reportedly risen to 50 trillion won ($32.7 billion), reflecting growing demand from AI chip designers including Meta and Anthropic. The foundry division, which manufactures semiconductors for other companies, returned to monthly profitability in June for the first time since 2023, according to Korean media reports citing internal targets.

The turnaround aligns with Samsung’s strategy to win larger custom-chip programs from clients increasingly looking to diversify away from industry leader TSMC. Meta is exploring Samsung’s 2-nanometer process for its Meta AI Training Infrastructure chips, while model developer Anthropic has also expressed interest in the advanced node. The foundry secured its initial backlog after winning chip orders from Tesla last year and Groq for inference processors. Samsung officials said negotiations remain preliminary, but company management expects to post full quarterly operating profits starting in the third quarter, driven by expanded production of high-bandwidth memory chips and improved yields on its 4-nanometer process.
