China Buys 26 Million Barrels of Middle East Crude After Saudi Price Cuts

businessenergy-marketsoilworldchina 40 posts · 18 accounts

Chinese buyers snapped up at least 26 million barrels of Middle East crude for July and August delivery, according to data from price-reporting agency Argus. The purchases were facilitated through tenders and one-off deals sourcing cargoes from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Iraq. This volume significantly exceeds recent purchasing patterns, which had slowed earlier in the year as shipping disruptions complicated logistics for regional buyers.

The buying acceleration followed Saudi Aramco's announcement that it would slash the official selling price for August delivery to Asia by $11 a barrel to a $1.50 discount against the Oman and Dubai benchmark. The steep discount, the deepest since mid-2020, was intended to help the kingdom regain market share. The move coincided with seven key OPEC+ members agreeing to increase production by 188,000 barrels a day starting in August, adding further crude to a market facing higher supply expectations.
