Oil Surges More Than 8% After Trump Declares Ceasefire With Iran Over

businessenergy-marketsoilpoliticswarworldiran 176 posts · 77 accounts

Oil rose more than 8%, and the September-October Brent spread swung to a backwardation of more than 70 cents a barrel from a 40-cent contango seven days earlier, after Trump declared the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran over. The move followed Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels, U.S. retaliation and another Iranian response.

Near-dated Brent contracts led the rally as traders reacted to the risk that the Strait of Hormuz could be closed again or that transits through the waterway could be severely reduced after attacks on shipping and aerial attacks on targets on both sides of the Gulf. Negotiators remain in contact, but the ceasefire is under severe strain.
