Hormuz Shipping Disruptions Leave Some Crews Stranded for 100 Days Despite Ceasefire
Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains uneven despite the ceasefire, with many vessels still waiting to pass through the waterway and thousands of seafarers stranded aboard ships in the Persian Gulf. Some crews have been unable to leave the gulf for more than 100 days because of the conflict and the disruption to shipping.
The recovery has been patchy across cargo types. Major container lines have managed to pull most of their ships out of the Gulf after the strait partially reopened, but liquefied natural gas traffic remains far below recent levels: only two LNG carriers crossed Hormuz this week, down from 13 a week earlier, as Iran repeated warnings against unapproved routes and spot rates softened.
The fallout is also showing up in oil flows. Chinese crude imports fell for a fourth straight month in June to a new 10-year low, with the Hormuz crisis damping demand and reducing purchases.
