Russia imports 60,000 tons of gasoline from India as drone strikes deepen fuel shortages
Russia has begun importing gasoline from India to address severe domestic fuel shortages, with at least 60,000 metric tons already shipped, two sources said. Moscow plans to import up to 400,000 metric tons monthly from India and other countries including Belarus as it grapples with fuel distribution disruptions across dozens of regions. The emergency purchases mark a notable reversal for Russia, historically a major gasoline exporter, as it seeks to stabilize supplies and curb surging prices at the pump.
The shortages stem from sustained Ukrainian drone attacks targeting critical refining infrastructure deep within Russian territory. Kyiv reported strikes on a refinery in Ufa and a strategic facility in the Penza region on Wednesday, continuing a campaign that market data shows has severely curtailed domestic processing capacity. Russian seaborne diesel exports collapsed by 39% in June to 1.8 million metric tons as waves of attacks forced unplanned shutdowns at key refineries. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak asserted that domestic fuel markets are well supplied and prices are manageable, but industry reports and visuals from across the country contradict this assessment, showing widespread rationing, long queues at service stations, and government-imposed limits on refueling into canisters.
