Canada and Alberta Unveil Plan for Pipeline to Export Crude to Pacific Coast
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced an agreement to build a new pipeline connecting the country’s oil sands to the British Columbia coast. The project is designed to transport up to 1 million barrels of crude daily to a deep-water port in southwestern British Columbia, establishing a direct export route to Asian markets and reducing reliance on the United States.
The southwestern alignment largely follows the existing Trans Mountain corridor, bypassing a longstanding tanker moratorium that has blocked north-coast developments. The agreement designates the government-owned Trans Mountain Corp to handle planning and construction, collaborating with Pembina Pipeline for operational expertise. Construction could begin by September 2027, marking a rare reversal of positions across Alberta, British Columbia, and the federal government. The initiative is a core component of the Pathways Project, which aims to boost oil sands production and strengthen Canada’s energy export infrastructure amid ongoing trade hostilities.
